Dj P#rn: PIONEER DDJ-SZ – The Flagship Controller has arrived

Pioneer has been on a tear  the past year releasing controllers for all price points and skill levels. From beginners, the easy on the wallet DDJ-WEGO, and for the All-In-One Dj, the XDJ-R1. Over the holidays, Pioneer dropped some huge news. A follow-up to the hugely popular DDJ-SX – The Mothership controller for Serato DJ, Pioneers DDJ-SZ. This beast features large 8.1-inch JOG wheels with center display, and boasting 2 separate sound cards, enabling two separate Laptops to plugged in and control the unit cohesively.

Pioneer DJ expands its family of Serato® DJ Software controllers with the DDJ-SZ, its flagship model that strongly emulates the look and feel of Pioneer’s world-renowned CDJ digital players. The DDJ-SZ is designed for the serious “controller” DJs who are inspired by the performance specifications of Pioneer’s professional DJ products but also want the convenience of an all-in-one system. The new controller is 35 percent bigger than the widely popular DDJ-SX, sporting additional functionalities and features including extra large JOG wheels (the same size available on CDJ players), large performance pads with multi-color illumination, DJM style mixer, dual USB ports and a MAGVEL cross fader.

BIG JOG WHEEL

The most noticeable CDJ PRO gear integration to the DDJ-SZ is its large 8.1-inch JOG wheels. The JOG wheels provide instantaneous response and excellent operability for accurate and smooth scratching and mixing performance. The center of each JOG wheel also features “ON JOG display” to illustrate playback status, cue points and position. In addition, the unit offers a JOG FEELING ADJUST to enable users to change the resistance of the wheel from light to heavy for a customize feel.

PERFORMANCE PADS

Directly below each JOG wheel are four effects buttons – HOT CUE, ROLL, SLICER and SAMPLER. Under the effects buttons are eight extra large “performance pads” that DJs can quickly access to insert different modified effects to music playing. In Sampler mode, the output volume of the sampler effects also varies depending on the strength of user’s tap of the pad. An update from the current DDJ-S controllers, the performance pads on the DDJ-SZ illuminate in different colors to quickly communicate the effect mode it is in.

DUAL USB PORTS

The DDJ-SZ includes two USB ports to enable simultaneous connection of two computers. Users can instantly switch between two computers for seamless transitions between two DJs or as additional music sources.

HIGH-END MIXER

The mixing area of the DDJ-SZ also closely mimics Pioneer’s DJM series of professional mixers, utilizing a generous number of controls and effects with features including Sound Color FX and new Oscillator functions to deliver more creative music arrangements. The mixer can also be used as a standalone 4-channel mixer for outboard players and turntables.

  • Oscillator – The new Oscillator on the right side of the mixer provides four types of sound effects: Noise, Siren, Cymbal and Horn. A quick touch of the buttons activates the effect(s), which can also be modified in amplitude (volume) to add to the music currently playing.
  • Sound Color FX – The mixer includes four Sound Color FX functions (Pitch, Jet, Echo and Filter), which add numerous audio effect combinations and arrangements to currently playing music with a simple twist of the knobs. Through Serato DJ’s beats per minute (BPM) analysis, users can also synchronize Echo effects to the BPM of currently playing music.
  • DVS Functionality – The controller can support DVS (Digital Vinyl System)1 using control tone to enable an external player to be used as a Serato DJ deck.

MAGVEL CROSS FADER

For extremely smooth transitions and high durability between the DDJ-SZ’s players, the unit features a MAGVEL cross fader (the same component used in Pioneer’s DJM-900SRT) that utilizes a contact-free magnetic system that can withstand more than 10 million operations. The “cut in” time of the cross fader can also be customized to the user’s preference.

ADDITIONAL FEATURES

  • Serato DJ Software – Bundled with the DDJ-SZ for an easy out-of-the-box experience.

  • Slip Mode – While activated, Slip Mode silently continues song playback during a performance loop, scratch or hot cue and resumes audible playback when the loop, scratch, or hot cue operation is ended, creating smoother and more seamless transitions.

  • Needle Search – Users can immediately jump to a specific part of a music track with a simple touch of the Needle Search pad.

  • High Quality Audio – A low-jitter clock and high-performance digital-to-analog converter (DAC) are used for accurate audio playback. In addition to a 24-bit digital signal processor to minimize digital noise, its balanced hybrid operational amplifier and balance output circuit also reduce analog circuit noise.

  • Built-in Sound Card (audio interface)

  • P-LOCK Fader Cap – Prevents the fader knob from slipping off during extreme use.

  • Auto Standby – Automatically switches to standby mode when no activity or input is detected for a period of time.

Dj P#rn: Pioneer Dj – Remix Station 500

Continueing on the Pioneer vibe, alongside the news of Pioneers flagship controller, the DDJ-SZ, Pioneer came out with a new companion to the RMX-1000 – the RMX500.

This mini me comes packed with Rhythm & Scene FX and packs all you would ever need for a gig  (or mix). check out what Pioneer has to say:

OVERVIEW

The REMIX STATION 500 offers three effect sections, Rhythm FX, Scene FX and Release FX, for simple musical arrangements and features the industry’s first “Pressure Controller” knobs, which further alter and vary the effects of the arrangements. In addition, the system can also act as a USB controller when used with the included VST1/AU2/RTAS3RMX-500 Plug-in software.

RHYTHM FX

The Rhythm FX section of the REMIX STATION 500 offers five audio effects, ROLL, TRANS, ADD, REV DELAY, and OFFSET, which cuts up and manipulates parts of the music playing to produce new rhythms. The effects can be increased and decreased with a turn of the large knob as well as altered when the knob is pushed down, activating the pressure controller.

The Rhythm FX section also incorporates five Instrument buttons (KICK, SNARE, CLAP, HI HAT and CYMBAL), each offering six different patterns of sound that can be added with a simple touch. The unit also features a 4-Beat Sequencer with an OVER DUB button, and when activated, enables users to record one bar of each instrument button for more unique sound effects playback. The OVER DUB can also be deactivated after the recording process and while playback occurs, to then give users the ability to tap each button for additional instrument sounds.

SCENE FX

In the Scene FX section, users can choose from five Build Up effects and five Break Down effects. The Build Up effects, consisting of MOD, ECHO, NOISE, SPIRAL UP and REVERB UP, add sounds, while Break Down effects, consisting of HPF, LPF, ZIP, SPIRAL DOWN and REVERB DOWN, cut sounds. The large knob increases or decreases the parameters of the chosen effect with a simple turn as well as changes the effects with a push of the knob. Two sub-parameters knobs are also available for additional changes to the effects being produced.

RELEASE FX

The system also includes a Release FX button that eliminates the current music playing and leaves only the sound effects when activated. Release FX can also be used to create the opposite effect: When the button is disengaged, all section effects are eliminated while the original music continues to play. Three types of Release FX are available, Vinyl Brake, Echo, and Back Spin.

PLUG-IN SOFTWARE

Using the included REMIX-STATION 500 VST/AU/RTAS plug-in software, users can create the same types of music production and effects while producing on a computer. In addition, connecting the device to a computer enables it to act as a controller for music production.

ADDITIONAL FEATURES

  • QUANTIZE function enables real-time music analysis and synchronization of effects along with the beat of the music
  • AUTO BPM function automatically measures and follows the tempo of music
  • Compact design for easy portability and convenience
  • USB-MIDI for use as a MIDI controller

Leaders of the New School Q&A: Dj’s From Mars +10

A couple weeks ago the Martian Dynamic Dj Duo: The Dj’s From Mars released a plethora of Bootlegs & Mash-ups with their release of Bootfella’s vol2(Click to check out our coverage of it). It wasn’t much longer after listening to the Bootleg Pack that I contacted the martian Disk Jockeys about getting together for a lil Q & A. Thanks to NASA and other fine space agencies, Here is what we got…

1) First off thank you for taking the time to travel cross the galaxy for us. Give us your early observations of earths club scene?
  • Hi and thanks to you for gettin in touch!!, Well, club scene on Earth is pretty sparkling at the moment, Djs are real superstars in the last years and clubs and festivals are growin bigger and bigger….that’s the reason we left Mars LOL 🙂
2) You guys have been quite busy as of late, your latest single ‘Insane (In da Brain) ft Fragma ‘ was recently released alongside a remix contest… How is it like to be judging a contest where artists all over the world are remixing something you guys created in the studio?
  • It’s great cause it’s what we usually do…we take existing tracks and try to add some alien flavour….so it was pretty cool to hear how many ways there are to feel a track made by us….we received remixes in very different styles, from dubstep to electro to progressive to handsup to bossanova (!!!) that’s the great thing in music today, barriers are being crossed every day and internet is a great creativity tool!
3) As if the new.single and contest wasn’t enough for you guys, you dropped a HUGE remix / bootleg pack a couple weeks ago. I recognized a couple of bootlegs of there like the shm / gaga rmx from 2011, how long did it take you to compile this masterpiece of bootlegs ?

  • Thanks for the nice words 🙂 well sometimes u may need 2 or 3 weeks to finish a track, sometimes in 5 hours it’s ready…it depends on the feeling of the moment, on the inspiration u have on that track and on how many cans of RedBull u have left in the studio 🙂
4) Moreover, what didn’t make the cut 😉

  • LOL

5) I’m sure there are tons of fans and upcoming talents dying to know what do the DJs from mars use for production? Any special gadgets? anything special in your dj bags ?

  • We produce everything with Cubase…it’s a complete tool which lets u work without even thinking about the software….u just create and let urself go into the music…..this should be the main point for every software: if u spend too much time on “computer stuff” then it means u’re losing your focus on what you are REALLY doin, which is music 🙂 – btw we also use tons of plugs which are fully integrated with cubase so we never get bored 🙂
6) Ok, I really gotta know, who designs your helmets ?

  • they’re made by ourselves!

7) What cities have you enjoyed spinning your crop circles the most?

  • Hahaha, well we left a huge crop circle in Atlantic City last year while opening for Tiesto at Taj Mahal Arena…that was MASSIVE….but every gig has its own place in our alien hearts….last year we traveled a lot and we had the chance to visit such places as Australia, China, Brazil, Dominican Republic, Canada, Sweden, Norway, Poland, Germany, Greece, Spain, and the list can continue…..it’s great cause probably we’d never had the chance to be there if we had an ordinary job…now we are lookin forward for next year’s gigs!!
8) What’s up next for the DJs from Mars ? Ep / single / mix or podcast
  • We are working on several remixes and bootlegs and podcasts as usual, but in 2012 we’d like to focus on our own productions….that could be the next step for us, but we like to be carried by events, so who knows?

9) Where can your earth fans stay up to date with the DJs from Mars via Interweb ?

  • the most updated page is our Facebook www.facebook.com/djsfrommars
  • we love it cause we can post there pics or thoughts even while travelling, so we are almost 24/7 there…if u are into Twitter, no worries, it’s synced to our Facebook LOL 🙂
10) Add Anything here you want to, shameless info, links, whatever…
  • just stay tuned and be prepared to have a SLAMMIN 2012 – peace, DJSFM

Numark will unveil 4TRAK at booth #6400 at the 2012 NAMM Show from January 19-22 in Anaheim, California.

4TRAK is the ultimate controller for Traktor software, combining legendary Numark build quality with the critically acclaimed performance capabilities of Native Instrument’s software.

4TRAK lays out a vast array of fully mapped controls for Traktor software right in front of you, putting a playground of capability at your fingertips. DJs can mix anything: 4TRAK’s built-in four-channel mixer allows turntables, microphones, MP3 players—really anything—to be added into the mix. Each of 4TRAK’s channels has an input selector, so DJs can instantly transition between controlling Traktor’s four decks and their external sources.

4TRAK offers unparalleled control over Traktor’s effects and filters with the expansive 12-knob FX KOMMAND CONSOLE. DJs have top-level access to effect and filter parameters, giving them incredible performance capabilities. They can layer effects, adjust filters, and mix and match both instantly in ways not possible on any other controller. 4TRAK’s platters feature bi-colored, rotating LEDs, 3600 ticks of resolution per rotation, automatically adjusting sensitivity, and high-resolution 14-bit MIDI, which combine to provide ultra-precise turntable control. 4TRAK’s layout features mouse-less library navigation, Master Tempo, complete Pitch Control, manual and instant Looping, Hot Cues and more.
“We wanted to give DJs the ultimate performance tool for Traktor,” said Chris Roman, Senior Product Manager, Numark “This is it—4TRAK represents the most precise hardware-software integration for Traktor, and it’s built like a tank.”

4TRAK will be available in Q1 of 2012 with an MSRP of $1499 and an estimated street price of $1099.

TOTAL KOMMAND

Both the FX1 and FX2 decks give you three controls that can be assigned to the effects of your choice. Each FX deck also features time division controls, allowing you to match your effects to a track’s BPM instantly, and giving you continuous control over an effect’s pacing.

BUILT-IN FOUR-CHANNEL MIXER
Each of 4TRAK’s channels has an input selector, so you can instantly transition between controlling Traktor’s four decks and your external sources. Connect two CD players, two turntables, two mics—the combinations are endless. Grab tracks or loops from your music library one moment, then your turntable, iPod, or a mic the next. 4TRAK makes it possible to take music from virtually any source and bring it into your mix.

4TRAK is a complete DJ controller, able to handle everything you’ve got, empowering you to perform at your highest level.

ADVANCED STRIP SEARCH TECHNOLOGY
4TRAK includes the groundbreaking Numark innovation known as Strip Search. Originally introduced with NS7, this incredible virtual-needle-drop technology allows you to locate any point on a track by using an advanced touch strip on each deck. LED track indicators above each strip provide real-time visual feedback about the tracks position.

COMPLETE KONTROL
4TRAK’s platters feature 3600 ticks of resolution per rotation along with automatically adjusting platter sensitivity, giving you high definition turntable control. With ultra-precise, high-resolution 14-bit MIDI, 4TRAK removes the line between hardware and software, giving you incredibly tight response. Bi-colored LEDs also surround each platter, providing both an indication of the Deck in control and also a Deck’s playback status. Effects can be instantly accessed by channel.

The simple and intuitive design of 4TRAK includes favorites like mouseless library navigation, Master Tempo, complete Pitch Control, manual and instant Looping and Hot Cues. You’ll get direct access to beat grid controls and beat skip, allowing you to juggle a track inline with the beat so that it never loses sync. 4TRAKS built-in professional 24-bit audio interface guarantees pristine audio quality from your computer.
